What are some great meal ideas for a toddler birthday party?

Question by Sweet Potato Pie: What are some great meal ideas for a toddler birthday party?
We are having over about 4-5 little boys for my son’s 3rd birthday party. It will be a pool party with lemonade in a big bubba keg. The theme is Spider Man with little treat bags for all kids. I’m looking for some meal ideas that I can make for the event. I want to avoid the typical pizza or hot dogs and try to have something at least somewhat healthy. I will do a fruit tray but want something for the main meal. Ideas please?

What is the recipe for the Healthy Meals in Minutes Chicken Pot Pie?

Question by Bryan: What is the recipe for the Healthy Meals in Minutes Chicken Pot Pie?
I am looking for the recipe card details for the Healthy Meals in Minutes Chicken Pot Pie, including the crust

Best answer:

Answer by Gary H.
Sorry i do not have that recipe for you,bur this is mine.

Healthy Chicken Pot Pie
This is a staple at our house. There are many variations including a vegetarian version, It is no harder to make 2 pies (or more), so generally, You can make an extra one to stick in the freezer to enjoy later, or to bring to a friend.

If you are in a hurry, and use a pre-made crust and chicken you already have on hand, the prep time is only about 5 minutes. If you make your own crust, it really only adds about 5-10 minutes to the prep time.
Cook time is 45 minutes.

Per pie, you will need:

* 1 C. chopped and cooked chicken breast (preferably organic/free range/all natural)
* 1 Can organic cream of chicken soup
* 1 C. chopped veggie mix (such as peas, green beans, and carrots) – I use an organic frozen mix from the store, but you could use fresh as well.
* 1 tsp. Sage
* Salt and pepper to taste
* 2 Tbsp. Olive oil
* 2 Pre-made uncooked pie crusts, one for the bottom and one for the top OR you can make your own whole wheat pie crust by following this simple recipe (just remember to double it, and separate it so it makes a bottom and a top crust)

*Preheat oven to 375 degrees

1. In a large bowl, combine chicken, soup, veggies, sage, and salt and pepper. Set aside.
2. Place one of the uncooked pie crusts in the bottom of a standard pie pan. Again, this site has great instructions along with photos on how to do this.
3. Fill the pie with the chicken/veggie mixture.
4. Cover pie with the top crust, and seal the edges. I like to roll the excess toward the middle of the pie and then use my thumb to make indentations around the edges.
5. Place aluminum foil or special aluminum covers around the edges of the pie.
6. Bake for 20-25 minutes, remove foil and brush the entire top of pie with the olive oil.
7. Bake for an additional 20 minutes (for a total bake time of 45 minutes) or until the crust looks golden brown.
8. Let cool for about 5 minutes before cutting.

*If you freeze your pie, and take it out to make later, a frozen pie takes about an hour to bake in a 375 degree oven

Top 5 FAQs about Healthy Meal Plans

Most dieters have questions about healthy meal plans. Eating a well balanced diet for weight loss can be confusing because so many foods seem healthy when they really are detrimental to your waistline and your health. And some dieters have very specific questions about what should or should not be included in a healthy weight loss plan.

So in this article, we answer the top five most commonly asked questions about meal plans and healthy eating—questions that are more specific than the general “how to be healthy”-type of inquiries.

Q. Is it possible to make gluten free meatloaf? Can it be included in a healthy diet?

A. You can make a yummy gluten-free meatloaf by either eliminating or substituting the usual breadcrumbs or oatmeal for a wheat-free option. There are several recipes for this kind of meatloaf on our website, so you can do a search for the recipe that sounds best to you. The most common type of GF meatloaf uses GF breadcrumbs, which are usually made from rice and can be purchased at most health food stores. If meatloaf is prepared with all-natural beef or bison and doesn’t contain gluten, it can be a good addition to your healthy eating plan.

Q. Is wheat bread fattening?

A. You should avoid wheat bread and all wheat products if possible. On the Diet Solution program, we advocate eating only bread made from sprouted grains, such as Ezekiel 4:9 bread, and only that in moderation. Most of the wheat bread on the market is highly processed and contains additives, preservatives, and sugar—all of which are destructive to your weight loss diet. In addition, if you have digestive issues or bloating, you may have gluten or wheat intolerance. If you steer clear of wheat products for a while and your symptoms improve, you probably have sensitivity to wheat and should avoid it in your diet as much as possible.

Q. What are some Omega 3 benefits?

A. If there’s one supplement you should take while dieting, it’s Omega 3 fatty acids. You can also increase your intake by eating flaxseed oil, raw walnuts, whole organic eggs, certain types of fish, and green leafy vegetables. Increasing your supply of Omega 3s can help lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol, lower your blood pressure, and act as an anticoagulant. In addition, Omega 3s may help decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, though research is still being conducted in that field.

Q. What are the dangers of high fructose corn syrup?

A. High fructose corn syrup (HFC) can wreak havoc on your weight loss program. HFCs have been linked to a significant risk of increased weight gain and obesity (in one Princeton study, rats fed with HFCs gained weight 300% more quickly than rats fed fructose). HFCs have been associated with an increased probability of developing type-2 diabetes, hypertension, and elevated bad cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. HFCs are also difficult for your liver to process, which can lead to liver damage and other problems. Finally, HFCs have been found to contain high levels of mercury. This means they should be avoided, especially by pregnant women and young children.

Q. Name one reason why I should go organic?

A. Your health. Foods that are grown or raised without the use of pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics are better for your long term (and short term) health than foods that contain these troubling substances in abundance. Not only do you support small farms and local growers by choosing an organic way of living, but you improve the quality of the food you eat dramatically. Going organic is one of the most positive changes you can make to your healthy lifestyle.

Vital Vegetables: Why Eating Your Greens is an Important Part of a Healthy Meal Plan

We’ve all heard our mothers or grandmothers tell us to eat our vegetables, or perhaps we have even scolded our own children for snubbing the broccoli on their dinner plates, but the truth is that getting enough “greens” is vital for a healthy meal plan in order to lose weight. In fact, getting enough veggies is one of the key components in an overall healthy lifestyle that will lead to optimal weight, longevity, and a higher quality of life.

So how much is enough? If you are looking to get enough servings of vegetables a day, then you should be aiming for two to three servings of vegetables a day. In an era of convenience, it can seem daunting to add another side to an already prepared meal plan, but steaming some broccoli or spinach, or adding some kale or squash to any meal is not labor intensive and so great for your digestive system and your waistline.

Not all Vegetables are Created Equal: Hidden Sugars that Can Derail a Healthy Eating Plan

I know, you would never think that sugar would be in vegetables, but actually there are certain veggies that are high on the Glycemic Index, which means they are loaded with starch, simple sugar, and not high in fiber. These are the types of “veggies” that can spike your blood sugar.

So since you have your choice when it comes to choosing vegetables, stay away from the most common ones like carrots or peas and corn (which aren’t actually vegetables at all, but belong to the legume and grain family) and try your hand at some alternatives.

Here is a quick list:

Spinach
Kale
Lettuce
Celery
Peppers (any color)

Vegetables are also great sources of naturally occurring hydration. Vegetables are made up of water, which makes them excellent choices for not only getting the necessary vitamins and minerals that your body needs, but also can help keep you hydrated, satiated, and on top of your game.

How to Prepare Veggies: Why Raw is Sometimes Better When Starting a Diet Program

Vegetables can be an acquired taste, especially less common options like kale and rutabagas, but the less common the vegetable the better you can bet it is for you. For some of the more bitter vegetables, steaming them can make them a little more palatable. However, whenever you can eat veggies raw, it is better for you.

Steaming, cooking or baking vegetables can lessen the mineral count. What is leeched out from the cooking process will never make it into your system, which in some cases (if you really like your veggies thoroughly cooked) can leave you with a pointless addition of vegetables to your meal plan.  However, there is a trick if you simply cannot stomach the idea of raw vegetables or if your stomach isn’t used to digesting some of the more fibrous ones.

Steam or blanch your vegetables and save the leftover broth/vegetable water. Use this base in a stew of or in your crockpot when you are making dinner. The vitamins and minerals that may have been lost in the process of cooking will be found in the water. So this is a very innovative and tasty way to keep the goodness there is in vegetables even if you can’t eat them raw.

That being said, if you don’t mind raw veggies, then eat all you can. There is nothing better for energy, digestion, and overall health than what Mother Nature can provide!
